ISO ACCREDITATION
ISO certificates prove that a business is committed to high standards in its business management systems and procedures. They are an important part of any growth strategy because they result in more business, reduce cost, reduce inefficiency and improve performance. Having a ISO certificate is an important deciding element when scoring subcontractor applications, particularly during tenders. There are a number of different ISO standards reflecting different management systems. The three most relevant to our clients are:
- ISO 9001 Quality
- ISO 14001 Environmental
- ISO 45001 Health and Safety (formerly OHAS 18001).
The ISO standards describe how you should identify the measures you wish to control and how you should manage and review the effectiveness of those measures. They do not say what those control measures should be. It is up to you to decide what you are controlling and how, and the level of your commitment. For example, obtaining the ISO 14001 environmental certificate does not mean that you have to switch to electric cars.
The process of obtaining an ISO certification is the same for each ISO standard and involves a number of steps:
1. Drafting a Management System. Setting out the processes and procedures that you wish to be audited. We draft this so as to include only those processes and procedures that you can easily manage to an auditable standard without significantly increasing your workload.
2. Implementing the management system, including maintaining the paper trail to prove it and carrying out internal auditing. We provide the necessary instructions and procedures and can carry out the internal audits, if you wish.
3. Once your system is in operation, we, or a third party approved by UKAS, certify that you are compliant and provide the ISO certificate. The certification lasts for three years but is subject to an annual audit to ensure continuing compliance and a re-certification audit once every three years.
